Military Appreciation Month: Recognizing Those Who Serve

What is Military Appreciation Month and Why is it Important?

May marks Military Appreciation Month, a time to pay tribute to the dedicated men and women who serve in the US armed forces. These brave individuals sacrifice their safety, comfort, and time to safeguard our nation and its values while also promoting peace and stability around the world through their missions in diverse regions and countries.

At present, there are about 1.3 million active-duty service members and 800,000 reserve and National Guard members, and approximately 18 million veterans who have previously served. Their number comprises a substantial proportion of our population who have contributed or are contributing to the history and well-being of our country.

Military Appreciation Month presents an opportunity to demonstrate our gratitude and recognition of their service and sacrifice, as well as to learn about their stories, accomplishments, and needs. By celebrating and supporting our military members and veterans, we show them that we value their contributions and are invested in their welfare.

How to Celebrate and Support Military Appreciation Month?

There are several ways to commemorate and appreciate Military Appreciation Month, both individually and collectively. For example, cities and towns may organize parades featuring marching bands, floats, vehicles, flags, and banners, while ceremonies may feature speeches, awards, wreaths, salutes, anthems, prayers, or moments of silence. Several businesses and organizations may offer discounts or freebies to military members and veterans during this time.
